Description:
In 1972 construction of the Forum Hotel started in the center of Warsaw (today it is the Warsaw Novotel). It was a huge event for the whole city. It was supposed to be one of the first skyscrapers in the capital and a Swedish company, Skanska, was building it. So it was an "imported good". People used to stand there for hours and watch the fantastic Swedish workers through a wire fence. They were beautiful, tall, long-haired blondes. They walked around the construction site as angels - in their fabulous, sky-blue uniforms. They had belts and many construction accessories: wrenches, hammers, pliers. It was a bit as if they were soldiers - driving their bulldozers and operating their cranes - calm and full of dignity. And they drank beer from cans! [In Poland there were no cans at that time – translator’s note] Polish workers came to look, too. My Sportsmen came and showed them the Italian elbow gesture. (E.D.)
